Meet Our Veterinarians

Dr. Susan O'Brien
Dr. Susan O'Brien

DVM, Owner

Dr. Susan O’Brien followed her lifelong aspirations of becoming a veterinarian. She graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2010 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. She is a 2006 graduate of Sweet Briar College in Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

In her final year of veterinary school, Dr. O’Brien completed a rotation in a rural Peruvian village, treating dogs, cats, donkeys, and horses. This experience sparked a passion for philanthropic efforts and volunteerism that continues to guide her career.

After veterinary school, Dr. O’Brien completed a year-long internship at a mixed animal practice in her native Ohio. She remained at the practice for two more years as an associate veterinarian, focusing on general medicine and emergency care of horses, dogs, and cats.

She later moved to Colorado and began working at a small animal clinic while developing her own business. Her inspiration for founding Colorado On-Site Veterinary Services was to elevate preventative care with dental maintenance, vaccine protocols, deworming strategies, and nutritional support.

She has earned several advanced certifications, including:

  • Veterinary Acupuncture (Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians)
  • Chiropractic Care (International Veterinary Chiropractic Association and Options for Animals College)

In her free time, Dr. O’Brien enjoys riding, hiking, fishing, and exploring Colorado with her husband, Kenny, and daughter, Violet. They share their home with three dogs, two cats, a Haflinger, two Quarter Horses, and a lively group of ducks and chickens.

Dr. Annie Schmidt

Part-Time DVM

After earning her degree from Colorado State University, Dr. Annie Schmidt made the Western Slope her home.

She believes in an individualized, compassionate approach to veterinary care and is a strong advocate for the human-animal bond.

Her professional passions include surgery, geriatric care, and the treatment of small mammals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats.

Outside of work, you’ll find her enjoying the Colorado outdoors with her family — hiking, floating rivers, snowshoeing, and skiing. She shares her home with two gray cats and two adventure-loving dogs.

Murphy
Dr. Steven Murphy

Part-Time Relief DVM

Dr. Steve comes to us from Ocala/Marion County, Florida — The Horse Capital of the World.

He solo practiced there for over four decades, beginning with a thoroughbred broodmare practice that evolved to include exotics and veterinary student clerkships from the University of Florida.

He is known fondly as FatherDoctorMister Murphy through his 20+ years serving the Sunshine Region Pony Club as a doctor, mentor, and “designated dad.”

Dr. Steve relocated to Colorado with his high school sweetheart, Teresa, to be closer to their daughter, an equine veterinary surgeon. Along for the journey: a homebred thoroughbred named Booker, two mini ponies, two German Shorthaired Pointers, two cats, and an African Grey named Westly.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Phoebe moved to Colorado in 2014. After living in several parts of the state — from Durango to Denver — she settled in the Valley to pursue a degree in Veterinary Technology at Colorado Mountain College, graduating in May 2021.

Though her background began in small animals, Phoebe quickly discovered her passion for animals of all sizes and species, leading her to On-Site Veterinary.

She’s the proud fur-mom to two dogs, Biggie and Archie. When not at work, you’ll find her summiting Colorado’s 14ers, rock climbing, or trail running as she trains for her next big race.

Karely

She has since lived in the Vail Valley for a decade and currently lives in Gypsum with her 2 dogs, cat, and husband. She got her start in the valley as a nanny, dogsitter, and ski instructor. Her professional career started with a local real estate company where she grew into her strengths in Marketing and Management. She is thrilled to be bringing additional support to On-Site Veterinary and its clients. Outside of work Heather enjoys camping, paddleboarding, a quiet night with a puzzle or some live music in the outdoors.

Trudy
Trudy

Current Clinic Cat

Trudy quickly rose through the ranks and now proudly serves as Director of Operations (according to her).

She delegates much of the day-to-day work to her fellow feline, Frannie, while she oversees things from her favorite nap spot in the basement.

When awake, Trudy enjoys staring intently at anyone nearby until they give in to her demands for affection.

Frannie
Frannie

Current Clinic Cat

Frannie is an accomplished napper and a frequent front-desk fixture.

After a successful career as a house cat, she brings charm and mystery to her role as On-Site’s “Artist in Residence.” Her availability is unpredictable, but her presence is always appreciated, especially when it involves treats.

gayle
Gayle

Original Clinic Cat (In Loving Memory)

Gayle was our beloved 18-year-old clinic cat and the original queen of On-Site Veterinary.

Adopted from a local shelter as a senior, she lived out her golden years at the clinic with grace, sass, and love. Gayle was diagnosed with kidney disease, and when her condition progressed, we made the painful decision to say goodbye.

Her memory lives on in every sunny windowsill and gentle purr. We miss you, Gayle.
