What is enrichment, and why is it important?
Enrichment is crucial for the development of a happy and healthy kitten. It provides engagement with their natural behaviors and habits such as hunting, climbing, and exploring. Enrichment helps keep your kitten happy and healthy, both physically and mentally, by allowing them to engage in activities that stimulate both mind and body.
Touching paws, legs, ears, etc – Gently touching/petting/playing with your kitten’s paws and other body parts will help them become accustomed to and remain calm during the sensation of being touched. This is particularly helpful during veterinary visits, grooming sessions, at-home care, and other similar situations.
Introducing new sights, smells, sounds, and people – Gradually introducing new sights, smells, sounds, and people to your kitten will help desensitize them to the world, and is crucial in their socialization process. Use lots of treats and praise when something new is introduced to create a positive experience for your kitten. Some great options for treats include Churu and Vital Essentials freeze-dried treats.

Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, hunting cat feeders – Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, and hunting cat feeders are a fun way for your kitten to use their natural hunting instincts to search and find their food. There are lots of different feeders and mats you can buy, or make your own sensory box by filling a cardboard box with crumpled paper, treats, and/or toys for your kitten to explore in and find the treats/toys. Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, and hunting cat feeders can be used as a fun game with treats and toys, or try giving your kitten their full meal in one to keep them thinking!
Interactive toys – Interactive toys are a great way to keep your kitten moving and thinking. They are also amazing at strengthening your kitten’s bond to you. To keep the game fun for your kitten, allow them to catch the toy every once in a while. This will help build their confidence in you and themselves. Some great toys include wands, a toy treadmill, and stuffed toys to hide around the house for your kitten to find.
